In this course, we will study the conceptual and theoretical problems that arise from contemporary biology.  These problems include:  What is a gene?  Are species real?  Is adaptationism a "just so" story?  What are biological functions?  Is there a human nature?  Is genuine unselfish behavior possible?  What should conservationists conserve?  Is there an arrow to the history of life?
