Economics Minor:

9 September 2000

Although my career goals do not include business, I have incorporated economics into my course work at "K." My initial justification was that I might be interested in the courses: Economics of Developing Countries and Environmental and Resource Economics. These courses apply to my focus on biology, environment, and sustainable development. Biologists may need the skills and concepts of economics to write environmental impact statements or help communities realize the utility/value in their natural resources. The ability to communicate environmental values to governments in dollars and cents comparisons is another area where economics and environmental conservation overlap.

As far as choosing to minor in economics, this is something that I sort of "fell into." I was surprised that I even enjoyed my introductory classes. Next quarter I will be taking Environmental Economics and I am hoping to cement my decision; however, I think this minor will compromise completing an African Studies Concentration. Currently, I do not think I have room in my future schedule to fulfill the requirements for both.

Courses I have taken (last updated 10 April 2002):

Requirements for the minor in Economics:

Six units are required.

Micro and Macro are Required Courses

Four additional courses from the Dept. are needed to fulfill requirements
