Goals For My Major
-
Declare my major
-
Talk with people in the computer
science department about the classes I need to take and how I can take
all of them in the next two years
-
Try to get a 4.0 in all of
my classes in my major
-
Take my calculus requirements
before spring quarter of junior year
-
Decide on a SIP
-
Possibly get an internship
after junior year
Why did you choose this particular
major? What in your background, course work and life experience has
prepared you for it? How does this major support your personal and
professional goals?
I decided to be a computer
science major during winter quarter of my sophomore year. I took
many psychology classes prior to this decision, and while I enjoyed most
of these, I don't feel like psychology is something I want to pursue as
a career. I took Intro to Computer Science
during my freshman year and really liked the projects that we did in that
class, so I took Intro to Programming
to see if CS was a major I would like. I really liked the work for
this class a lot--finishing a project is so satisfying, and they require
the kind of hands-on critical thinking that I enjoy.
I feel like I have been
using computer my entire life, and I have always really liked them.
Computer science seems like such a natural major for me to have given my
background with computers. I only wish that I had decided on it as
a major earlier than my sophomore winter.
Computer science will
allow me find a "real job" soon after graduation. Every time I tell
someone that I am a CS major they reply by telling me that I'll find a
job right away. CS also will allow me to have a career in which I
can work with people on larger projects, but also have a lot time to work
independently. This is very important to me. I don't need constant
interaction with people to be happy, and this way I do not need to rely
totally upon other people to do well.
