SIP CONTRACT

After much deliberation about what I would do for my SIP, I decided I want to go against the norm and not complete a SIP in my major.  While I’m sure a computer science SIP could be quite helpful for my future career, I believe that I am better suited to do a more creative SIP.

I realized after studying abroad that I want to pursue a more creative career.  I would like to incorporate my computer science background into this career, but I don’t want to go into a strictly technical field.

I have also always had a strong interest in photography.  While a digital art SIP might correlate more with my computer science major, I wanted to pursue my photographic interests further.  Thus I decided to do a photography SIP.

I could not get into the spring 2002 photography class because so many people enrolled in it, so I had to take Photo 1 at the KIA.  While this made the process of remembering how all the buttons on my camera work a bit tougher, I am very happy with the work I produced in that class.

Over the summer I came up with the idea for my SIP, expanding it from just photography to now, ‘painting with light’.  During Photo 2 I learned how to print in color and have narrowed down my theme even more.  My classes have all aided in developing my ideas and improving my camera and darkroom technique in order to create my final project.

My SIP is a study of identity, using photography as the medium.  In a completely dark room I will be tracing my subjects with light, outlining their bodies to show just the basic shape and form of who they are.  While I do this, my subjects will also trace their own hands, to give the photograph a piece of themselves; a signature, if you will.  I will then ask each subject to write a few words stating how they identify themselves.  This description will be stamped with their handprint to tie in with the handprint on the photograph.  I will then choose words of my own that say how I identify the person, and we will be able to see how just the quick flash of light, the brief statement of words, and my own description are able to come together to create an identity for that person.

My SIP supports my personal and professional goals in many ways.  I would like to go into a creative field or work that will incorporate my computer skills.  With this SIP, I will have a polished piece of work that will show my future employer what I am capable of creating.  This piece, along with my other classwork in my major and minor will create a full picture of all the things I am capable of doing.  I could simply stay in computer science with my SIP, but then I would not have as broad a showing when it comes to what I have done.

Personally I want my SIP to reflect my creative nature.  I want my SIP to be something I really enjoy working on.  I want my SIP to be something I can share with others and that they will enjoy hearing about and seeing.  I believe that my photography SIP will accomplish all of these goals.
