Age of Majority in Michigan

Michigan gives legal adult status to anyone 18 years of age or older. This act applies not only to the citizens of Michigan, but also to any person who happens to be within the boundaries of the state and, therefore, to all students of Kalamazoo College who are at least eighteen years of age.

While the law introduced new rights and freedoms, it also included some new responsibilities and liabilities. Some of the implications of the act are as follows: every person 18 and over can register to vote in local, state and national elections; can sue or be sued; can be selected for jury duty; can buy on credit by signing a retail charge agreement; and can sign legal contracts. However, a student must be 21 years of age to purchase or consume alcoholic beverages in Michigan.

The majority of our students are over eighteen years of age and so are treated by the College as legal adults. This does not mean, however, that the College no longer has the right to impose and enforce certain rules and regulations.
