The opening night performance includes a pre-show ceremony to inaugurate the grand re-opening of the Nelda K. Balch Playhouse. Dates and times are: Thursday, <strong>November 7, 7:30 PM<\/strong>; Friday and Saturday, <strong>November 8 and 9, 8 PM<\/strong>;, and Sunday, <strong>November 10, 2 PM<\/strong>. Tickets are $5\/students, $10\/seniors, and $15\/adults. Thursday night\u2019s performance is &#8220;pay-what-you-like.&#8221; Call 269-337-7333 for reservations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s a beautiful theatrical experience,&#8221; says Festival Playhouse Manager <strong>Laura Livingstone-McNellis<\/strong> (an alumna theatre arts minor from the Class of 1989). Her statement captures the irony of art and suffering, of art on suffering. &#8220;The way cast and crew combine movement, text, and voice to create the semblance of a dream is nothing less than stunning,&#8221; she adds.<\/p>\n<p>The play depicts a female demigod\u2019s visit to earth to explore the nature and depth of human suffering. Livingstone-McNellis\u2019s &#8220;semblance of a dream&#8221; description and the play\u2019s theme reminds this author of poet Lucille Clifton\u2019s poem &#8220;sorrows,&#8221; recently anthologized in <em>Poetry<\/em> magazine\u2019s <em>The Open Door: 100 Poems, 100 Years of <\/em>Poetry<em> Magazine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>sorrows<\/em><\/p>\n<p>who would believe them winged<br \/>\nwho would believe they could be<\/p>\n<p>beautiful \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 who would believe<br \/>\nthey could fall so in love with mortals<\/p>\n<p>that they would attach themselves<br \/>\nas scars attach and ride the skin<\/p>\n<p>sometimes we hear them in our dreams<br \/>\nrattling their skulls \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 clicking their bony fingers<\/p>\n<p>envying our crackling hair<br \/>\nour spice filled flesh<\/p>\n<p>they have heard me beseeching<br \/>\nas I whispered into my own<\/p>\n<p>cupped hands\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 enough not me again<br \/>\nenough\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 but who can distinguish<\/p>\n<p>one human voice<br \/>\namid such choruses of desire<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Theatergoers should not miss Festival Playhouse of Kalamazoo College\u2019s production of August Strindberg\u2019s masterpiece of early expressionism, A Dream Play. Playhouse of Kalamazoo College\u2019s production of August Strindberg\u2019s masterpiece of early expressionism, <strong><em>A Dream Play<\/em><\/strong>. The opening night performance includes a pre-show ceremony to inaugurate the grand re-opening of the Nelda K. Balch Playhouse. Dates and times are: Thursday, <strong>November 7, 7:30 PM<\/strong>; Friday and Saturday, <strong>November 8 and 9, 8 PM<\/strong>;, and Sunday, <strong>November 10, 2 PM<\/strong>. Tickets are $5\/students, $10\/seniors, and $15\/adults. Thursday night\u2019s performance is &#8220;pay-what-you-like.&#8221; Call 269-337-7333 for reservations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s a beautiful theatrical experience,&#8221; says Festival Playhouse Manager <strong>Laura Livingstone-McNellis<\/strong> (an alumna theatre arts minor from the Class of 1989). Her statement captures the irony of art and suffering, of art on suffering. &#8220;The way cast and crew combine movement, text, and voice to create the semblance of a dream is nothing less than stunning,&#8221; she adds.<\/p>\n<p>The play depicts a female demigod\u2019s visit to earth to explore the nature and depth of human suffering.
