According to Breigh Montgomery,\u00a0Mary Jane Underwood Stryker Institute for Service-Learning, Institute programming this year will focus on food justice \u2013 with CES for MiRA (Migrant Rights Action), Farms to K, El Sol Elementary School Garden, Community Garden\/Nutrition Liaison, and Club Grub at Woodward Elementary School.<\/p>\n<p>Other programs use creative expression for empowerment among incarcerated youth and returning citizens; promote health (including provision of Spanish interpreter services\u00a0in clinical settings and reproductive health education to young women); educate public school children about nutrition and gardening; encourage critical dialogue about access to arts; advocate for fair and local food; foster adult literacy; and reduce educational disparities and promote college access by working with hundreds of Kalamazoo Public School students in schools, community-based organizations, and on our campus.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s civic engagement scholars and\u00a0programs\u00a0are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Luis Basurto-Jimenez<\/strong>\u00a0(Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies Medical Spanish Interpreter Program),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Zena Blake Mark<\/strong>\u00a0(Keeping the Doors Open Math Enrichment Program ),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ebony Brown<\/strong>\u00a0(KDO),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fanny Cruz<\/strong>\u00a0(Helping Youth Through Personal Empowerment),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Faiza Fayyaz<\/strong>\u00a0(Autism Awareness\/Young Adult Program),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Raven Fisher<\/strong>(Community Advocates for Parents and Students),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Angela Frakes<\/strong>\u00a0(Partners in Art),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paul Garza<\/strong>(El Sol Elementary School Parent Liaison),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alexander Griffin<\/strong>\u00a0(Fire Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amy Jimenez<\/strong>\u00a0(El Sol Elementary School Tutoring Program),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emily Katz<\/strong>(Woodward Elementary School Tutoring Program),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Komal Khan<\/strong>\u00a0(KDO),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Colin Lauderdale<\/strong>(Farmworker Legal Services\/Migrant Rights Action),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roxann Lawrence<\/strong>\u00a0(CAPS),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jack Massion<\/strong>(HYPE),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jay McMillan<\/strong>\u00a0(Goodwill Adult Literacy Tutoring),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anna Miller<\/strong>\u00a0(Razas),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ellen Murphy<\/strong>(Nutrition\/Garden Liaison),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Catherine Oldershaw<\/strong>\u00a0(Heartbeat),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jamie Patton<\/strong>\u00a0(Woodward Elementary School Tutoring Program),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ian Powell<\/strong>\u00a0(El Sol Elementary School Garden),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meredith Quinlan<\/strong>\u00a0(Women &amp; Gender),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dana Robinson<\/strong>\u00a0(KCMS Medical Spanish Interpreter Program),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chelsey Shannon<\/strong>\u00a0(Rising Up),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taylor Stamm<\/strong>\u00a0(Partners in Art),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Charlotte Steele<\/strong>\u00a0(Farms to K), and<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anna Witte<\/strong>\u00a0(Woodward Club Grub).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In academic year 2011-12, some 28 Civic Engagement Scholars (CES) are leading 20 different service-learning programs in collaboration with some 17 community partners.
