In the tradition of a nationally recognized liberal
arts college, student musicians at Kalamazoo College enjoy the highest
standards of teaching and learning combined with the special
opportunities for individual study and growth unique to the "K" plan.
Many performing opportunities, both solo and ensemble,
are available for majors and non-majors alike. Any student may be a
member of our performing ensembles: College Singers, Chamber Choir,
Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra,
Jazz Band, and
Percussion Ensemble. Students also have the opportunity to study
individually and in small groups with artist-teachers through the
Applied Music program. Our commitment to the best possible
undergraduate education means that students are never taught by
teaching assistants. At Kalamazoo, the best teachers at the College are
available to all students.
Both the music major and minor in music provide a
lively interaction between performance and academic scholarship. They
include a core curriculum of courses in music history, theory, and
conducting, as well as special opportunities to develop individual
performing skills and academic areas of interest at advanced levels. In
addition to the off-campus programs of the "K" Plan, students may
design independent study and special sequences in performance, history
and literature, and in theory and composition.
Since the music major or minor can be coordinated with
offerings of other departments, many students combine their music
background with education (music certification K-12), economics,
psychology, or history, for example, in order to pursue individual
career interests. "K" music alumni currently have professional careers
in a great variety of fields, including performance, opera (singer,
conductor), teaching (primary, secondary, college), administration
(symphony orchestra, arts council), and music therapy.
