About the Project
How much did the project
cost?
The estimated total cost of the project is approximately
$20 million, including a $1 milion maintenance endowment.
How was the project funded?
One of the specific objectives of the College's
Enlightened Leadership comprehensive campaign is to build
and endow the maintenance of the Upjohn Library Commons. Alumni,
friends, corporations and foundations are contributing toward
the renovation and expansion project.
What features were added
in the new building?
New spaces in the building house a video studio,
a multimedia studio, and videoconferencing capabilities. Technological
improvements in the new building also will include a combination
of wireless and networked ports, distance education capabilities,
computer clusters, and a Multimedia Lab.
The number of computer workstations for research
in the Reference Area increased from 12 to 24, and 54 computer
workstations were added on upper floors. The project includes
a Training Room for instruction in computer software as well
as library research. The second floor features a High Tech
Teaching Lab and eight classrooms (including three "smart"
classrooms) that also will house the Writing Center of the
Academic Resource Center during evening hours.
Users enter the building through a two story
glass atrium on Thompson Street. A Café area provides
users with a food service counter. In addition, an attractive
two story Reading Room on the second floor includes fireplaces
and comfortable seating with plenty of natural light.
Who do I contact if I have questions?
