In
an effort to encourage collaboration among departments, faculty,
and students, as well as to promote the liberal arts tradition of
multi-dimensional understanding, the LAC committee has created
a yearly theme.
Not Every LAC event must or will fit the
annual theme.
Utilizing the theme may give the event priority during the committee ’s quarterly consideration.
ONLY CONNECT: OF MEMORIES, PLACES, AND LEARNING
This theme most specifically recognizes that 2008 is the 175th anniversary of the college and the 50th anniversary of study abroad, anniversaries that will be celebrated throughout the 2008-09 academic year.
This years theme, “Only Connect: Of Memories, Places, and Learning”, asks the campus community to connect to the college's past, especially to past memories and study abroad sites (places).
Possible facets of this theme may include, but are not limited to connects with:
- College's past - memories
- Past Study Abroad sites (places)
- Exploration of how the past shapes our understanding of the present
-Comparisons between different times and different places as a mode of learning
- Exploration of the nature of memory itself
-Ways in which places gain meaning through the memories we attach to them, particularly as these memories are symbolically expressed in the arts, political life, popular culture, and collective rituals
