| Personal Web Pages
Computer Accounts
To create and maintain personal home pages you must first have
an account, which
can be
obtained from Information Services Systems (room 120,
Upjohn Library Commons) . Accounts are available to the following
people:
• Faculty and staff while employed at the College
• Students while enrolled at the College
• Graduated students until six months after their graduation date
• Retired faculty and staff
• Guests as approved by the Director of Central Systems
You will be required to sign a User
Agreement.
Standards for Personal Pages
A. These pages, though not reviewed by the Web Executive Committee, must reflect the principles of the
Kalamazoo College Honor System and conform to state and federal laws, licenses, contracts,
copyrights and the policies of Kalamazoo College.
B. Each Personal Page must include an electronic mail link to its author who will be expected to respond
in a timely fashion to inquiries about the page. The College does not endorse or approve any links
between outside or non-“K” College pages and any personal Web page. Any such links are the sole
responsibility of the page author.
C. Personal Page titles and headers should not include the name of the College. The name of the College
should especially not be used in such a way that a viewer of the page might think the page is an official
page of the College. If there is a legitimate use of the college name on a personal page, it must use the
full name: Kalamazoo College.
D. The Web pages of an individual faculty member, student, staff or approved guest of Kalamazoo
College do not implicitly or explicitly represent official positions and policies of the College. To that
end, every Personal Page author is required to have the following disclaimer in full at the end of their
Home Page:
The views and opinions expressed in these pages are strictly those of its author. The contents of
this page have not been reviewed or approved by Kalamazoo College. Authors assume all
responsibility and liability for the content of their pages. Please address all comments and other
feedback to the author listed in this page or click on the “mail to” link.
E. Each Personal Page and the central academic account that contains the information will be subject to a
pre-set allocation of space that is defined in the appropriate user agreement.
F. When a complaint is raised about one of these pages, or if traffic to a page has a negative impact on the
operation of the computing system, Information Services has the authority to remove the page and/or refer the complaint
for disciplinary action.
Web Authoring Software
Kalamazoo College does not require that a
certain tool be used to create and maintain Web
pages. We do make Dreamweaver software available
for faculty, staff and computer labs and provide limited support
for this application. Check with Web
Services with questions or to see
if spare licenses are available.
Publishing Your Personal Web Pages
No matter how you create your web pages, they must be uploaded
to the web server before anyone can view them online. FTP (file
transfer protocol) software is used to do this. FTP is built in
to Dreamweaver. WS_FTP
LE is also provided for all faculty, staff
and lab PCs, Fetch for Macs.
Connect via FTP or Dreamweaver to peopleftp.kzoo.edu,
using your username (your e-mail address up to "@") and your
network (e-mail) password. If it doesn't do so automatically,
change the remote directory to your username for storing your
web files.
Your home page should be saved as index.html or home.html and
should be stored in the root folder. Your home page address
is http://people.kzoo.edu/k00xx00 where k00xx00 is
replaced by your actual username. This alternative address is also valid and points to the same page: http://kzoo.edu/k00xx00 (Note: If you began building your site prior to Dec 2005, your directory may be prefixed with the tilde character,~)
Your other pages can be browsed at http://people.kzoo.edu/k00xx00/myfile.htm where k00xx00 is
replaced by your actual username and myfile.htm is replaced
by the actual name of your file. (Note: If you began building your site prior to Dec 2005, your directory may be prefixed with the tilde character, ~)
Valid file extensions are htm, html, shtml, php and asp. Note:
Filenames are not case-sensitive on our web servers, but it is
a good idea to maintain consistent case, in case you ever need
to move your site. |
