Information Services : Telecommunications Our VoIP system allows you to make telephone calls using a computer network, over a data network like the Internet. VoIP converts the voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that travels over the internet then converts it back at the other end so you can speak to anyone with a regular phone number. The technology is typically associated with free or very inexpensive phone calls via the Internet. At Kalamazoo College the context of its application is different but the expense reduction is the same.Unlike typical internet phone setups at home, our equipment will be isolated on an inaccessible network, so there is little security risk. The servers and switches that support the phone system have battery backups to ensure approximately an hour of service in the event of a power outage. There are some phones in key locations that are not be on the network so that in an emergency there are alternate options. Long distance, toll free calls and 911 service are all available.
