Peer to Peer File Sharing Policy

Members of the Kalamazoo College community share a valuable resource, our campus network. In order to optimize our network bandwidth for teaching and learning and to protect the college from copyright violations, we would like to remind all network users of the following policy, approved in October of 2001.
Users of the Kalamazoo College network may not use peer-to-peer file
sharing programs, including, but not limited to, Kazaa, Gnutella,
Morpheus, Audiogalaxy Satellite, Win MX, etc. Please also refer to
related policies regarding unlawful distribution of copyrighted
materials, which is a violation of the Kalamazoo College Honor Code.

Copyright violations such as sharing of copyrighted music and movies are especially troubling. Distributing copyrighted material is illegal and has always been against College policy and the College Honor Code. It is also subject to both internal disciplinary measures as well as legal prosecution and puts both the perpetrator and the College at risk.

Please note that copyrighted materials cannot be shared by any means without proper permission. This includes sharing via network file shares, the web, or any other means and is not limited to peer-to-peer programs.

For more information, please see the College web page on copyright issues as well as the other links of interest listed below:

Thank you in advance for your assistance in making sure the College's resources are used in a responsible manner.

Thank you,
Information Services
