Telecommunications FAQ

How do I report a problem with my phone line?

If you experience a dead line, first check your phone and connections. Believe it or not, the most common problem is the telephone itself or the cables connecting it to the wall. Start out by simplifying the connection of the phone by plugging it in directly to the wall jack and not through an answering machine or modem. Borrow a phone from a friend that is known to be working and try that phone in your jack. Use the cable that works with the good phone.

If you are still having problems after you have tested your line with a good phone, then call or email the Help Desk (x5800 or helpdesk@kzoo.edu) to report the problem. The Help Desk will forward the report to the appropriate personnel. If necessary, Information Services will call the telephone company to fix the problem.

How do I order a new phone line?

Ordering a new phone line requires an account number for charges and a description of the services needed on the phone. If you already have a phone in your department with the same set of services that you want on the new line, then just specify the phone number with the services that you want copied. The faculty or staff member ordering the new line should send the necessary information to network@kzoo.edu. Students cannot place orders for new lines.
