Kalamazoo College has instituted a campus-wide policy on printing
to avoid paper and toner waste. Take advantage of these tips to
conserve paper and toner.
Save your
documents to a disk.
Most documents can be saved to a disk; you can even save text
and graphics from Web pages. Electronically saved documents are
searchable with the FIND function (control+F) in Word or Web
browsers.
Email documents
to yourself.
Email documents and citations to yourself from the Library's online
catalog and other online databases. This allows you to save the
information you want without printing it.
Use scrap paper to jot down information.
Instead of printing out several pages of paper for one small
detail (such as a call number, name, or title), use scrap paper
to take notes.
Use Print
Preview to print only
the pages you want.
Documents, especially Web pages, often print out on multiple sheets
of paper, but sometimes you only need the information from one
page. Use Print Preview to determine which pages you need in order
to avoid printing unnecessary pages.
Print only one copy of a document.
Printing several copies of a document ties up printing queues,
making everyone wait for their printouts. If you need multiple
copies, use the photocopiers on campus. For large jobs, Office
Max, Office Depot, or Kinko's may be considerably cheaper than
using campus photocopiers.
One click of
the PRINT button is fine.
Do not click the PRINT button multiple times! Your printout may
not appear immediately because it is behind another print job in
the queue, or the printer may be out of paper. Check for problems
before clicking PRINT again
or you will waste print credits,
paper, and toner by printing multiple copies.
Choose Printer Friendly versions of documents.
Complex graphics take a long time to print and will slow down
printing queues. Choose the "Printer Friendly" version
of documents, or save graphics to a disk.
Use your own printer (or a friend's printer)
to print out documents.
The most effective way to avoid printing costs on campus is to
print using your own equipment. Save electronic copies of documents
(on disk or via email), load them onto your computer, and print
them at your leisure.
