REFERENCE INSTRUCTION: RESEARCH INSTRUCTION FOR UPPER-LEVEL CLASSES

Reference Librarians at the Kalamazoo College Library offer course-specific research instruction for upper-level classes. Each instruction session is tailored to your course, and sessions can be customized for a specific course assignment.

Students will learn to:

  • use a web browser to access the library website and the Course Research Guide for their class
  • use Ariadne (the library's online catalog) to search for books
  • use discipline specific indexes to find citations to articles, chapters, and books
  • find journal articles in full text via the library's online subscriptions
  • use appropriate online databases to gather resources on a given topic
  • differentiate between scholarly and popular resources
  • evaluate Websites for accuracy, authority, objectivity, and currency

The session includes a demonstration of Ariadne (the Library's online catalog) as well appropriate online indexes and databases. The Librarian may also discuss scholarly and popular resources, how to find full text articles, and how to evaluate Websites. Other topics may be added by request.

A Research Instruction Session for upper-level courses also includes a Course Research Guide for your class. Each guide follows a standard format to ensure consistency, but also is tailored to address specific topics and assignments covered in your course. All Course Research Guides remain on the Library Website so students can access these resources at any time.

To set up a research instruction session for your class, contact a Reference Librarian at reference@kzoo.edu or 337-7152. Please have an assignment available.
