INTERLIBRARY LOAN
(ILL)
To use the ILLiad system, log in with your Kalamazoo
College network (knet) username and password. The
first time you log in, you will need to complete
a short registration form. Once your account is
established, you can request books and articles
without entering your personal information each
time. In addition, you can check on the status of
your requests, ask for renewals, or cancel requests.
Instant email notification lets you know when your
materials have arrived. You may pick up books
at the Library Circulation Desk; all articles
will be delivered electronically to your ILLiad
account.
If you have questions, call the Reference Department
at 269-337-7152 or email reference@kzoo.edu.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) supplements the Kalamazoo
College Library's resources by providing materials not available
on campus for research needs. Through ILL services, current
Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and staff may obtain
materials such as books and journal articles that are not
available in the Kalamazoo College library collection. This
service is administered in accordance with the standards
of the American
Library Association Interlibrary Loan Code for the United
States.
Contact the Interlibrary Loan Department via
email at ill@kzoo.edu
or by phone at (269) 337-7148 if you have questions or would
like additional information.
Who Can Use the ILL Service
Current Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and staff
in good standing can use the Library's ILL service. Alumni
and emeriti faculty
are not eligible to use interlibrary loan through Kalamazoo
College. Alumni and emeriti may be able to interlibrary
loan items through their local public libraries; alumni
and emeriti who live in the Kalamazoo area may request
interlibrary loans
through
the Kalamazoo
Public Library's ILL service or the KPL's
MeLCat service.
A patron is not in good standing if they have over $20
in library fines, or have been blocked by ILL staff for
having too many overdue items.

Summer Requests
Interlibrary Loan services are provided year round; however,
in the summer months when classes are not in session (approximately
mid-June through mid-September), many students, faculty,
and staff conduct research off campus. Generally, items
will be ordered only for current students who reside
locally, and for current faculty and staff who are in
the area to pick up items at the Circulation Desk. However,
some materials may be requested by off-campus researchers:
Articles
Articles may be ordered through the ILLiad
Interlibrary Loan system and delivered
electronically as a PDF file. If you are a current student, faculty, or staff
member conducting research off campus over the summer, please
include a note with your ILLiad article request stating you are off campus.
Otherwise, the ILL department will deny requests for articles held at the Western
Michigan University libraries. ILL staff will only order articles available
at WMU during the summer months when classes are not in session for researchers
who are not on campus.
Books and Returnable Items
Unfortunately,
we cannot send ILL items off campus; all books and
other returnable items (media, microfilm, etc.) must
be picked up at the Kalamazoo College Library Circulation
Desk. If you will be off campus and need to interlibrary
loan a returnable item (book), please consult your
local public library. If your local public library
participates in MeLCat,
you may also order books through MeLCat as a patron
of your local public library and have them delivered
there.
What Can Be Requested
If the material is available at one of Western Michigan
University's libraries, you cannot request it through
interlibrary loan; you must go to Western to retrieve it
(see Directions
to Western's Libraries). Kalamazoo College students
and faculty have borrowing privileges at Western Michigan
University's libraries upon presentation of a valid Kalamazoo
College identification card (see Borrowing
Privileges at WMU).

How to Request Materials through
Interlibrary Loan
To request materials through Interlibrary Loan, you
must complete and submit a request form in ILLiad,
the Kalamazoo College Library's Interlibary Loan service.
The length of time to obtain materials through
interlibrary loan varies. Requests are processed in the order
they are received, but some items arrive faster than others.
Most items can be obtained within two weeks. Budget your time
wisely, do your research early, and allow enough time for
materials to arrive.

Picking Up and Returning
ILL Items
How will I be notified?
You will receive an e-mail message from the Interlibrary
Loan Department on the day your material arrives. Loan
periods are limited, so pick up all materials as soon
as you are notified of their arrival.
Where will my ILL
materials be held?
-
RETURNABLE Interlibrary loan materials (such as
books or microfilm) are held at the Library Circulation
Desk. Ask for your materials at the Circulation Desk
and Library staff will retrieve them for you.
-
NON-RETURNABLE Interlibrary Loan materials (such
as articles) are delivered directly to your ILLiad
account as PDF documents.
Where do I return ILL
materials?
Interlibrary loan materials must be returned to the
Circulation Desk. Articles do not need to be returned.
Cost
Students do not pay fees for requesting or using ILL
items.
Faculty and staff are not charged individually for ILL
materials. The Provost's office is charged the full amount
of each request at the end of each quarter.

Loan Periods
PDF copies of articles are yours to keep.
Lending libraries determine the due date of books and
other materials loaned through interlibrary loan. The loan
period is usually two
to four weeks. Use the materials as soon as they arrive.
If you need to use a book past its due date, contact the
interlibrary loan department regarding a possible extension.
Overdue fines of $1.00 per day are applied to all
interlibrary loan items.
< top
>
Renewal Requests
A renewal must be requested at least 5 days before
the item's due date. Renewal requests are subject to the
policies and discretion of the lending library. Request
your renewal through ILLiad.
< top
>
Overdues and Fines for
Lost/Damaged Items
Overdue fines of $1.00 per day are applied to
all interlibrary loan items.
Fines accumulate until the item is returned, renewed, or
declared lost.
Borrowing privileges are suspended if a borrower
owes more than $20.00 in fines, replacement costs, or billing
fees. Borrowers must pay library fines or fees in excess
of $20 in order to reinstate borrowing privileges. Fines
and fees may be paid at the library Circulation Desk. Cash
or checks are accepted.
Materials not returned within 30 days are subject to a
$10.00 charge for accumulated fines and the cost of billing.
When an item is more that 45 days overdue, the library will
declare it as lost and bill as follows:
| Replacement
cost: |
$45.00 or higher, depending on the replacement
cost of the item |
| Fines and
Billing fees: |
$15.00 |
The library attempts to notify borrowers of
overdue materials. Failure to receive notification does
not absolve borrowers of accrued obligations.
Patrons are responsible for all costs associated with lost
or damaged materials. Charges for lost or damaged items
are assessed by the lending library. Patrons are responsible
for payment of these charges. If materials are lost in transit
or after they have been returned to the Kalamazoo College
library, the ILL Department will reimburse the lending library.

>
Recalls and Conditions
Items borrowed through Interlibrary Loan are loaned
through the courtesy of other libraries and governed by
their loan rules. The lending library may set conditions
on use or recall items at any time. Conditions, such as
"no renewal" or "in library use only,"
are indicated on the identification band around each item.

>
Dissertation Policy
The ILL Department will try to obtain copies of dissertations
and theses whenever possible. However, dissertations can
be difficult to obtain through ILL because often they are
owned only by the institution where they were written, and
many schools do not circulate their dissertations.
Submit dissertation requests to the Interlibrary Loan Department,
which will contact you if we are unable to borrow the item.
If the item cannot be borrowed, patrons must purchase the
dissertation or thesis.
If you choose to purchase a dissertation through Dissertation
Express, the dissertations will take about two weeks
to arrive and will be yours to keep.

Copyright Compliance
The copyright law of the United States (Title
17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies
and other reproductions of copyrighted material.
Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries
and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other
reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the
photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any
purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research."
If a patron makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy
or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use,"
that patron may be liable for copyright infringement.
Kalamazoo College reserves the right to decline a copying
request if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the request
would violate copyright law.
Kalamazoo College also abides by the CONTU
guidelines. See also Copyright
at Kalamazoo College.
