Kalamazoo College Upjohn Library

LIBRARY FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

The following facilities and media are available for student use:

Audio, Video and DVD Playback Equipment

There are DVD, video, CD, and tape playback carrels on the west side of the second floor of Upjohn Library Commons.

A player for international format DVDs and videos is available on the second floor in the viewing carrel on the far right.  The remote control for the player is available for checkout at the Circulation Desk.
The remote control unit will change language settings. 

Students can also check out audio playback equipment from Media Services, located on the first floor of the Library, Room 152.

Media Rooms 212 and 217 on the second floor also contain a TV and a DVD / VCR player.

Audio Edit Lab

The Audio Edit Lab is located on the first floor of the Upjohn Library Commons, room ULC 142.

Biggby Coffee Café
The Library's Biggby Café is located on the main level near the library entrance. The Biggby Café serves coffee drinks and other beverages, as well as snacks.

Bulletin Boards for Postings

Upjohn Library Commons serves the College community as a center of campus activity, news, and academic life. Library bulletin boards provide an avenue for College community members to advertise events and other announcements.

Postings are permitted only in these Bulleting Board locations:

  • First Floor: on the bulletin board in Biggby Café
  • First Floor: on the bulletin board in the Copy Room, and
  • Third Floor: on the bulletin board across from the elevator

Postings are not permitted anywhere other than bulletin boards. This includes (but not limited to) the exterior of the building, on outside and inside doors, in restrooms, on equipment or materials, on security gates, on windows, and on walls in the Upjohn Library Commons building.

Center for New Media Design - Graphics Lab

The Center for New Media Design supports Kalamazoo College faculty, staff and students in the creation of materials for course projects or other college-related activities, including multimedia presentations, posters, images, web pages, and other graphics. The Center offers many services, including color printing and copying, poster printing, laminating, transparencies, slides, and scanning. For service costs, please see Graphic & Printing Costs.

The Center for New Media Design is located on the first floor, in Upjohn Library Commons room 140.

Hours: 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Computers and Internet Access

Computers are available for research in the Reference Area and for other uses throughout the Upjohn Library Commons building. They provide access to the library's online catalog Ariadne, electronic resources, and the Internet.

Computers are primarily for the use of current Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and staff. See Information Services Acceptable Use Policy and the Library Visitors and Guest Users policy.

All computers (except the two Guest Computers in Reference) in the Library have the full versions of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.

Fax Machine

A fax machine is available at the Circulation Desk. You may send or receive information. Charges are as follows:

Sending: $1.00 for each page, within the US

Receiving: $1.00 for each page, within the US - Library fax number: 269 337 7143

International faxes must be sent and received through the Mail Center in Hicks Center.

Microfilm / Microfiche Reader and Printer

The Microfilm / Microfiche Reader and Printer is located in the Reference Area. Microfilm articles can be printed using the printer connected to the Microfilm Reader and cost 10¢ per page. Please pay for printouts at the Circulation Desk.

Photocopiers

Two photocopiers are located in the copier room just west of the Circulation Desk. Photocopies are 10¢ per page. You may use cash (coins and bills up to $5).

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Library patrons copying any materials on Library copy machines are solely responsible for using the materials in compliance with copyright law.

Printers

The library provides printing services at 10¢ per page, standard 8 ½ x 11" black and white print outs. Students may print single sided or double sided pages; the cost is 10¢ per page for both single sided and double sided printing. Laser printers are located throughout the building. Reading Room

The Reading Room on the second floor of the Library is available as reflective study space for students, faculty and staff.  The room is not meant to be used for meetings, social functions or receptions.

Recycling

Containers for recycling paper are located below printers and next to photocopy machines in the library, as well as throughout the Library. Recycling bins for cans and bottles are located in the Biggby Café on the main level.

Scanner

A scanner is available on the second floor near the grand staircase for use by current student, faculty, and staff.

Slide Viewing

Students may view slides in Media Rooms 212 and 217 on the second floor, and in rooms 302, 311, or 312 on the third floor.

There is a text enlarger in Media Room 217 on the second floor.

Video Production and Editing

The Video Production Studio is located on the first floor of the Upjohn Library Commons, in room ULC 147. The Production Studio is available to faculty and students to enhance classroom and independent learning for academic credit.

The Video Edit Lab is located on the first floor of the the Upjohn Library Commons, room ULC 129. It is available to faculty and students to enhance classroom and independent learning for academic credit.

Wireless Network Access

The Upjohn Library Commons offers Wireless Network Access throughout the building.

Writing Center

The Writing Center is part of the College's Academic Resource Centers.

At the Writing Center, student writing consultants work with students at any stage of the writing process - advice is available for all stages of the writing process, from brain-storming to the final draft. The Writing Center is open for any student who would like feedback on a paper; a portion of a SIP; an application for study abroad, medical school or graduate school; a piece of creative writing; a presentation outline - whatever you're writing.

Hours: 8:00pm to 11:00pm, Sunday through Thursday.
