Searching Ariadne for Audio
Recordings
If you know the composer or performer, use an AUTHOR
Search.
You may limit your AUTHOR search to musical recordings only.
After performing your search, click the "Limit This Search"
button at the top of the page. Select "Musical Recording"
from the "Material Type" drop down menu. This will exclude
scores and books, retrieving only sound recordings in various formats
(including records, cassette tapes, and compact discs).
Limiting to Compact Disc - By Composer
If you are looking specifically for compact discs of a composer's works,
use a KEYWORD Search.
Type the field abbreviation a: followed by the composer's name
and the words and compact disc, then press <Enter>
or click Submit Search.
If you know the distinctive title - TITLE
Search
Use a TITLE search for
musical works with distinctive titles (Dichterliebe, Fidelio,
Rite of Spring) but not for generic titles (Concerto, Sonata,
Symphony). Type some or all of the title, beginning with the first
word.
You may limit your TITLE search to musical recordings only. After
performing your search, click the "Limit This Search" button
at the top of the page. Select "Musical Recording" from the
"Material Type" drop down menu. This will exclude scores and
books, retrieving only sound recordings in various formats (including
records, cassette tapes, and compact discs).
Limiting to Compact Disc - By Title
If you are looking specifically for compact discs of a particular work,
use a KEYWORD Search.
Type the field abbreviation t: followed by the title and words
and compact disc, then press <Enter> or click
Submit Search.
If you know the generic title, or title and composer or performer
- KEYWORD Search
To search for works with generic titles (quartet, sonata, symphony,
etc.), use opus numbers or thematic catalog numbers in your search.
Type the composer's name with the numbers only, without other identifiers
(Op., K, BWV, etc.).
Use AND to specify all words. Use OR to specify any single word. Use
AND NOT to exclude words. See the Ariadne Guide
or Boolean Logic
for more help with Boolean searching.
Searching by KEYWORD
can be very useful when searching for short selections such as jazz
tunes, popular songs, or anonymous medieval motets. For prolific composers,
you may need to use a KEYWORD search to combine author and title
information. To use a KEYWORD search, type words that may appear
in a title, as an author (composer, performer, editor, association,
etc.), in a subject, or in the contents.
Multiple words are searched as an exact phrase. Use Boolean operators
(AND, OR, AND NOT) to combine terms.

Searching for recordings by subject headings - SUBJECT
Search
Use a SUBJECT search
to find musical works for specific instrumental ensembles and materials
about musical topics. You cannot guess what a subject heading might
be -- you must use the book Library of Congress Subject Headings
or select the appropriate subject heading from a bibliographic record
in Ariadne.
You may also use a SUBJECT search to find materials about
a composer or performer, rather than scores or recordings by
that person.
