KALAMAZOO COLLEGE TIMELINE

1833

Michigan and Huron Institute Charter granted by territorial government, April 22.

1835

Location for school chosen: Bronson, later Kalamazoo.

1836

First instruction begins in the fall.

1836-1837

First building erected.

1837

First attempt to secure college status from the state government. First official announcement of organized term instruction. Named Kalamazoo Literary Institute, March 21.

1838

Kalamazoo Branch of the University of Michigan established.

1840

Consolidation of Kalamazoo Literary Institute with Kalamazoo Branch of the University of Michigan.

1840-1850

College called Kalamazoo Branch of the University of Michigan.

1843

James Andrus Blinn Stone appointed president.

1846

Theological Seminary established.

1850 Second failed attempt to secure college charter from the state.
1850-1855 Kalamazoo Literary Institute name restored.

1850s Williams Hall constructed.
1851-1852 First academic catalog published.
1852 Kalamazoo Literary Institute and Kalamazoo Theological Seminary combined under Baptist Convention control.

1855

College charter secured one day after the state passes its general college bill. Kalamazoo College is the first college to receive a charter after the passage of the bill.

1857-1859

Kalamazoo Hall built.

1859

Normal Department (for teacher training) opens; it lasts only until 1863.

1860

Ralph Waldo Emerson lectures on February 14.

1861

Commercial Department established.

1863

$100,000 fundraising campaign begins.

1864-1867 John M. Gregory appointed president.
1866 Theological Seminary revived.
1867-1868 Professor Daniel Putnam serves as acting president.
1868 Dr. Silas Bailey serves as acting president.
1870 First degree granted to a woman, Catherine V. Eldred.
1877 Student newspaper, The Index, organized and published.
1884-1885 Rev. T. Nelson serves as acting president.
1887

Ladies' Hall completed; Rev. M.A. Willcox elected president.

1891 Rev. Theodore Nelson elected president.
1892 First football team.
1894 Academic departments established.
1902 Bowen Hall, containing the library, classrooms, and administrative offices, is completed.
1906 Preparatory Department established.
1911 Founders' Day first observed, April 22.
1925 Trowbridge Residence Hall, now the oldest building on campus, built.
1930 Mandelle Library opens.
1932 Stetson Chapel built.
1965 Aaron Copland receives honorary degree.
1967 Upjohn Library dedicated
1992

Dow Science Center built. Arthur Ashe receives honorary degree.

1996 College calendar changes from four quarters to three, still incorporating all elements of the K Plan.
1999 Common Reading program begins.
2004 Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran elected 17th president.
2005 K wins Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration.
2007 Hicks Center renovations begin. College begins Guilds initiative.
2008 College celebrates 175th birthday, and 50th anniversary of the Study Abroad program.
