RECORD GROUPS
Rather than using call numbers like those assigned to books,
archivists use record group numbers (RG 29, for example, to
represent Residential Life), followed by series and subseries
designations (RG 29/2 for Languages and Literature and RG
29/2.1 for English). This classification scheme represents
the College's structure and reinforces a principal of archival
arrangement: maintenance of provenance, which means materials
are filed by the unit or organization in which they originated
and are kept in their original order when possible.
