Technical and Media Services : Creating a Custom Background for PowerPoint

The following steps will walk you through how to create a custom background in Adobe Photoshop to be used in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.

  1. Open image editing software program Adobe Photoshop, which is installed on all of the computers in the Center for New Media Design. In the computer labs, the software is installed on the computers which have a scanner hooked up to them.
  2. Create a new file.
    • Select FILE –› NEW.
  3. Change the Image Size dimensions to the following:
    • WIDTH = 10 Inches
    • HEIGHT = 7.5 Inches
    • RESOLUTION = 100 pixels per inch
    • MODE = RGB Color
    • Click OK.
  4. Create your custom background.
  5. Save your file.
    • Select FILE –› SAVE AS.
    • Make sure that the FILE FORMAT selection is set to JPEG.
  6. To make this the background for a PowerPoint presentation, the image needs to be inserted into your presentation.
    • Select FORMAT -> BACKGROUND.
    • Select the Background Fill Drop Down Box.
    • Choose FILL EFFECTS.
    • Select PICTURE tab .
    • Click SELECT PICTURE.
    • Navigate to the image file and select it. Click OK.
    • If you wish to apply the background to all the slides, select APPLY TO ALL. Otherwise, select APPLY. This will apply it to the current slide. If you wish to preview the background, select PREVIEW.
