Copyright at Kalamazoo
College
MP3'S AND OTHER COPYRIGHTED FILES
To enable the fullest use of the campus network for the entire
community and to comply with the copyright law for the protection
of our community, Kalamazoo College expressly forbids copyrighted
works for which you do not own the copyright on the college network.
This includes, but is not restricted to, MP3, WMA and WAV (audio/music)
files; and MPG, AVI, VCD and DIVX (movie) files which represent
commercial works. Distribution (and possibly possession) of such
files is illegal without first obtaining proper authorization from
the copyright owner.
Before distributing copyrighted files via the campus network,
an individual must present the Dean of Libraries and Information
Services with documentation that expressly gives him or her the
legal right to distribute the specific files.

Punishments on Campus for illegal use of copyrighted files:
First Offense: Student computer is removed from the network
for at least one week. Network privileges will be restored pending
confirmation of removal of file sharing software.
Second Offense: Permanent removal of network privileges.
Information Services routinely analyzes our computing resources
to assure optimal performance. This includes monitoring traffic
on the network. In order to comply with the Digital
Millennium Copyright Act, we reserve the right to review a student's account when unusual
activity warrants or if we receive a complaint.
