New Service: Request Articles at Western Michigan University through ILLiad

The Library is pleased to announce that current students, faculty, and staff may now request articles owned by Western Michigan University through ILLiad, our interlibrary loan system!

What has changed?

In the past, when interlibrary loan systems relied heavily on the mail, the K College Library would not request articles from WMU due to the cost of postage and the relative proximity of WMU to our campus. Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and staff had to go to Western in person to get these materials. However, now these materials can be delivered through ILLiad as PDF files with no postage involved, so we will request articles owned by WMU through ILLiad.

What about books?

WMU books should be requested through MeLCat, and will be delivered to the Kalamazoo College Library circulation desk.

Can I request articles from electronic journals WMU owns?

Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and staff still must go to WMU in person in order to use their electronic resources (databases and electronic journals).

If you have questions, please contact the Kalamazoo College Library Interlibrary Loan department at 337-1748 or ill@kzoo.edu or Reference at 337-7152 or reference@kzoo.edu.

Overdues and Fines for ILL Items

During the renovation and expansion of the Upjohn Library Commons building, interlibrary loan overdues and fines were waived. Beginning January 2, hese fines and overdues are once again in effect.

Overdue fines of $1.00 per day are applied to all interlibrary loan items.

Patrons are responsible for all costs associated with lost or damaged materials. Charges for lost or damaged items are assessed by the lending library. Patrons are responsible for payment of these charges. If materials are lost in transit or after they have been returned to the Kalamazoo College library, the ILL Department will reimburse the lending library.

Materials not returned within 30 days are subject to a $10.00 charge for accumulated fines and the cost of billing. When an item is more that 45 days overdue, the library will declare it as lost and bill as follows:

• Replacement cost: $45.00 or higher, depending on the replacement cost of the item
• Fines and Billing fees: $15.00

The library attempts to notify borrowers of overdue materials. Failure to receive notification does not absolve borrowers of accrued obligations.

New Interlibrary Loan Partner: British Library

The Kalamazoo College Library has recently partnered with the British Library for interlibrary loan service between the two institutions. Though U.S. libraries will be given first priority when ordering materials, we are happy to contact the British Library for materials that cannot be obtained elsewhere.

All interlibrary loan materials, regardless of the originating library, should be ordered through ILLiad.

If you have questions about this service, please contact the Interlibrary Loan department at ill@kzoo.edu or 337-7148.

ILLiad Interlibary Loan Service Now Available!

The Library new Interlibrary Loan service, ILLiad, is now available! ILLiad replaces all past methods of placing interlibrary loan requests. Paper request forms and the old online request forms are discontinued. We will also no longer accept emailed requests.

Using the system is easy. Just log in with your Kalamazoo College network username and password. First time users will fill out a short registration form. Then you will be able to request books and articles without entering your personal information each time. You can check on the status of your requests, ask for renewals, or cancel requests. You will also enjoy instant email notification to let you know when your material has arrived. Though you will still come to the Library circulation desk to pick up books, all articles will be delivered electronically through your ILLiad account.

You can still request Interlibrary Loan items directly through FirstSearch databases and other online indexes -- just click the link that says "Request this item with ILLiad." You will be asked to log in to ILLiad and the request form will already be filled out for you.

If you have questions about using ILLiad, contact the Reference Department at reference@kzoo.edu or 269-337-7152.
