MeL is the Michigan Electronic Library, and the Kalamazoo College Library participates in many of the resources and services that MeL offers, including MeLCat and several indexes and full text databases. Your thoughts are important to us, so please complete the MeL
User Survey!

In an effort to continue improving MeL resources including MeLCat
so libraries and Michigan residents get the most benefit from the program, the Library of Michigan has contracted with EPIC MRA
to do a study on the Michigan eLibrary.

The study includes a phone survey to the general public, an online questionnaire for library administrators and staff, and an online questionnaire for the public. The online survey link is below.

Please respond to the library online survey. We need to hear from as many library staff and library users - public library patrons, teachers, university students and faculty, K-12 students - as possible.

Want to use a Library Classroom in the evening or on a weekend?

To Check Out a Library Classroom:

The Library Classrooms may be checked out on a first come,
first served basis.

Classrooms may be checked out between 5:00pm and 9:00pm,
Monday - Friday, and all library hours Saturday and Sunday.
Please come to the Circulation Desk to check out a Library Classroom.

Fine Arts office (269 337 7047 or carolk@kzoo.edu) between
7:30am-4:30pm, Monday – Friday.

You must make the reservation before 12:00pm noon on the day you would like to use the classroom, and before 12:00pm noon on Friday for use on a weekend.

Seniors! Extended Library Book Loans for SIP work

Seniors, Don't Get Fined!

Seniors working on their SIP may request extended loan periods for books checked out from the K College Library. Extended Loan periods are not granted for overdue books; students must request extended SIP loan periods before materials are due.

Loan periods may be extended for materials owned by K College Library only. Extended loan periods do not apply to materials borrowed from MeLCat or Interlibrary Loan.

How many banned books have you read?

Have you ever wondered where challenges to books in the United States actually occur? A new book censorship map illustrates that censorship efforts take place all across the country.

The American Library Association has named September 26th - October 3rd as Banned Books week. Observed since 1982, this annual ALA event reminds Americans not to take this democratic freedom for granted.

According to the ALA there were at least 513 challenges to books in schools and libraries in the United States in 2008. But the total is far larger, as most cases are never reported.

Reading Together 2010: "Snow Falling on Cedars"

The Kalamazoo Public Library community reading program, Reading Together, has selected David Guterson’s New York Times best-seller Snow Falling on Cedars as the 2010 Reading Together book.

Reading Together book discussions and a wide variety of special events will take place in March and April of 2010. Author Guterson will visit Kalamazoo on April 14, 2010, during National Library Week, to conclude this year’s program.

Celebrate the Constitution

To mark this year's Constitution Day, the Kalamazoo College Library has compiled a website of resources, including primary source documents, to provide the College community with information about one of America's most important documents.

Established by Congress is 2004, Constitution Day recognizes the ratification of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. The law, introduced by Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, requires that all educational institutions receiving federal funds provide information and instruction about the Constitution on September 17th each year.

New York Times Subscriptions for K College

Personal subscriptions to the New York Times are available to Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and staff at a discount
through Benson Distribution. Subscriptions for Fall Quarter start on Monday September 21st and go through Wednesday November 25th.

Subscriptions are for Monday through Friday, and do not include Saturday or Sunday.

MeLCat will be down all day on Tuesday August 4th.
The downtime will allow for server upgrades to MeLCat.

The following services will be unavailable during the downtime:

* Searching the MeLCat Catalog.
* Placing requests in MeLCat.
* Renewing MeLCat items; users may get a
"server unavailable" message.

MeL Databases downtime - Tuesday August 4th

MeL Databases will be unavailable via off campus access on
Tuesday August 4th. The downtime will allow for upgrades to
the MeL server.
