New Service: Request Articles at Western Michigan University through ILLiad

The Library is pleased to announce that current students, faculty, and staff may now request articles owned by Western Michigan University through ILLiad, our interlibrary loan system!

What has changed?

In the past, when interlibrary loan systems relied heavily on the mail, the K College Library would not request articles from WMU due to the cost of postage and the relative proximity of WMU to our campus. Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and staff had to go to Western in person to get these materials. However, now these materials can be delivered through ILLiad as PDF files with no postage involved, so we will request articles owned by WMU through ILLiad.

What about books?

WMU books should be requested through MeLCat, and will be delivered to the Kalamazoo College Library circulation desk.

Can I request articles from electronic journals WMU owns?

Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and staff still must go to WMU in person in order to use their electronic resources (databases and electronic journals).

If you have questions, please contact the Kalamazoo College Library Interlibrary Loan department at 337-1748 or ill@kzoo.edu or Reference at 337-7152 or reference@kzoo.edu.

New York Times offers free access to New York Times Online

Beginning immediately, The New York Times has stopped charging readers to access parts of its website. Additionally, access to the archives from 1987-present and 1851-1922 is also available to all users. The archives from 1923-1986 will be available, but some content requires a payment fee.

While the Kalamazoo College community already has free use of The New York Times, both current and archival issues, through the library's online databases, this new access will be useful to those accessing the newspaper directly through its website, The New York Times.

For more information, please see Times to Stop Charging for Parts of Its Web Site.

Reminders: Bye Bye Barcode and MLA, PsycInfo, & RILM interface change

Say Goodbye to Memorizing your Barcode Number!

Current Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and staff no longer need to use their name and 14-digit barcode number to use features of Ariadne, log in to research databases from off campus, or to request materials from MeLCat. Users now will be prompted for their K College username and password!

This affects:
In MeLCat, the system will ask you for your:
  • Campus ID# (this is your K College USERNAME)
  • Password (this is your K College PASSWORD)

MLA, PsycInfo, and RILM have a New Interface: CSA Illumina

On July 1, 2007 three of our databases (MLA International Bibliography, PsycInfo, and RILM) moved to the CSA Illumina platform from FirstSearch. This means these databases will look and search a little differently, but the content remains the same.

Why is this happening?

The Kalamazoo College Library subscribes to these three databases through the Michigan Library Consortium (MLC), which negotiates licensing and price. This year the price of the FirstSearch platform to these databases was significantly higher than for CSA Illumina, so MLC will be licensing them through CSA. In an effort to maintain our current FirstSearch platform, Kalamazoo College Librarians investigated the cost of keeping these databases with FirstSearch, but the 69% increase in subscription price over last year's price made the CSA platform the only affordable option.
