RESERVE GUIDELINES
FOR FACULTY (PRINT AND ELECTRONIC)
The Library provides Reserve services for materials
that will be in heavy demand throughout the quarter. Items
that may be placed on Reserve include books, articles, or chapters from the Library's collection, and
personal instructor copies. Audiovisual materials and slides
may be placed on Reserve as well. Materials owned by other libraries may not be placed on Reserve.
Reserve items that are held behind the circulation desk may
be checked out for two hours (audiovisual materials for four
hours) during the Library's open hours or overnight. Electronic Reserve materials may be accessed online at any time. Lists
of materials on Reserve (including Electronic Reserve) may
be retrieved using the Library's catalog, Ariadne.

Tab, and you may search by instructor name or course number.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
- Please bring all items for Reserve to the Circulation
Desk, along with the completed Reserve
Request Form (pdf).
- Reserve items are processed between 8am and 4pm Monday
through Thursday and between 8am and noon on Friday.
- We cannot accept verbal requests made by phone or through
a circulation desk worker.
- Please include a complete bibliographic citation and notice
of copyright on the first page of each copy submitted for
Reserve.
- Please allow 48 hours to process Reserve requests.
Please do not notify your class of the availability of Reserve
items on until you have received a confirmation from the
Library that your Reserves are processed and available.
- Unpublished manuscripts (SIPs, student
papers, etc.) require explicit permission from the copyright
holder in order to be placed on Reserve.

COPYRIGHT
- The Library adheres to the Fair Use Guidelines of United
States Copyright Law (Title
17, United States Code). If a Reserve reading is determined
to fall outside of Fair Use Guidelines, the faculty member
must seek permission to use the material for electronic
or print Reserve.
- For items requiring copyright clearance, permission to
copy may be requested through the Copyright
Clearance Center (CCC).
- If the copyright holder denies permission to use the
material for Reserve, the Library will remove it.
- Copyright permission must be granted for those items requiring
it before they can be processed for Reserve or placed on
Kalamazoo College servers.
- The Circulation Department requires copies of letters
of permission, evidence of fees paid, or evidence of permission
granted for submission of Reserve items that require copyright
clearance.
Please bring your letter of copyright clearance
or permission to copy to the Circulation supervisor.
- The Information Services
Faculty Handbook Copyright Policy (pdf file) from the
Information Services Faculty Handbook contains guidelines
on permissible copying of copyrighted works.
- For audio Electronic Reserves, the Library follows the
Statement
on the Digital Transmission of Electronic Reserves from
the Music Library Association.

BOOKS
- Books owned by the Kalamazoo College Library or personal
copies owned by the instructor may be placed on Reserve.
- Materials owned by other libraries cannot be placed on
Reserve
- If the Library does not own a needed book, please order
it through the Library's Acquisitions
department.
- The Library does not retrieve items for Reserve; faculty
or someone from the academic department must retrieve Library
items from shelves.
- Books on Reserve circulate for two hours (or overnight
if they are checked out less than two hours prior to closing)
PHOTOCOPIES: JOURNAL ARTICLES AND BOOK
CHAPTERS
- Please provide the Library with all needed photocopies
of articles and book chapters
- Materials owned by other libraries cannot be placed on
Reserve.
- Photocopied materials must include a full bibliographic
citation and notice of copyright to assure copyright compliance.
- The Library does not retrieve items for Reserve; faculty
or someone from the academic department must retrieve Library
items from shelves.
- Bound periodicals may be placed on Reserve for
up to two weeks. If journal articles are needed for the
entire term, please photocopy them according to copyright
guidelines and submit them for Electronic Reserve
(see COPYRIGHT
POLICIES FOR MATERIALS ON RESERVE OR RESIDING ON KALAMAZOO
COLLEGE SERVERS).
AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS
- Videos, DVD's, CD's, and slides owned by the Kalamazoo
College Library or personal copies owned by the instructor
may be placed on Reserve.
- Materials owned by other libraries cannot be placed on
Reserve.
- Multiple copies (up to 1 copy per 15 students) may be
placed on Reserve.
- If the Library does not own a needed audiovisual item,
please order it through the Library's Acquisitions
department.
- Audiovisual materials on Reserve circulate for four hours
(or overnight if they are checked out less than four hours
prior to closing)
ELECTRONIC RESERVE
There are two types of Electronic Reserve offered by the
Library: text and audio. For text materials, the Library can
link to full-text articles already available in our licensed
online databases (if this is permitted in our license agreement)
and Library staff can scan articles not available online into PDF format. For
audio materials, the Library offers Electronic Reserve in
MP3 format.
- Electronic Reserve files are placed in a password protected
directory on a college server.
- Only current Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and
staff may access Electronic Reserve files, using their username
and Kalamazoo College password.
- Electronic Reserve files may be accessed both on and off
campus.
- Electronic Reserve materials are removed from the server
at the end of each quarter.
- For audio Electronic Reserves, digital copies may be made
of whole movements or whole works. The Library follows the
Statement
on the Digital Transmission of Electronic Reserves from
the Music Library Association.
- Audio CD's owned by the Kalamazoo College Library (or
portions thereof) or personal copies of CD's may be placed
on Electronic Reserve.
- Materials owned by other libraries cannot be placed on
Electronic Reserve.
