Klayvaughn Williams
2002-2003 Participant

Madrid, Spain

Why I chose to go to Spain: Spanish culture really grabbed my attention when I was first considering going abroad. I’m interested in learning more about the Spanish language, Spanish history, family life, culture, Klayvaughn Williamstraditions and food. Going to Spain will open many new doors for me.

What I identified as the greatest challenges facing me as I began my study abroad program: Missing family and friends.

My ICRP: Experiencing the life at Immanuel Baptist Church and El Ubecu Seminario. I went there every day of the week, doing research and attending classes. I shadowed Dr. David C. Dixon, Pastor and Missionary of Immanuel Baptist Church. He is also the Dean and a professor at the seminary. He taught Parables and Greek language classes (in Spanish, of course). I read 7 or 8 books during the month of January to prepare me for my big project: organizing and facilitating a Retreat/Overnighter for University Students of all races, at Immanuel Baptist Church. I also attended the Spanish-language Chapel services every week at the seminary, and interviewed various students from the seminary. This church is extremely diverse, and everyone has a story. For instance, a lot of people immigrated because they were facing death in their countries and/or because they had to find work to support their families.

I have learned so much about myself and about Spanish culture through working at the church and seminary. Everyone has a different story and it’s so interesting to know, how they found God and why God is important to them. I guess that the biggest thing that I have learned is how to keep faith through many trials and tribulations and how to depend on God more rather than man.
