Perth, Australia

Why I chose to go to Australia: The courses are applicable to my major, the weather is nice, and I’ve heard that Australians are the friendliest people on Earth.

What I identified as the greatest challenges facing me as I began my study abroad program: Learning to cope with situations you would not place yourself in and people you would not choose to be around in your home country. It’s a real shock to discover suddenly that you have no choice — you’re stuck where you are, and you can either stick it ou or go home. It’s really a sink or swim situation, and it’s one I think everyone should attempt.

My ICRP: Solvent Abuse Among Indigenous Peoples
For my ICRP I am currently examining the very serious issue of solvent abuse in the Indigenous (often called “Aboriginal”) population of Australia. I am conducting research in the remote community of Laverton, meeting local Aboriginal people and interviewing community members of many different backgrounds—e.g., doctors, nurses, council members, police officers, and legal service staff. Back in Perth I have been speaking with local scholars and social workers and getting additional background by reading journal articles, etc. I’m overwhelmed by the enormity of the issue and the lack of clear solutions. Everyone has a different view, from optimistic and upbeat to bitter and doubtful. Dealing with the issue will be no small task and will undoubtedly color the lives of Australians, both Indigenous and of European descent, for years to come.
