Dakar, SenegalKristin Hirth with Host

Why I chose to go to Senegal:

What I identified as the greatest challenges facing me as I began my study abroad program:

My ICRP: Internship with Ecole de la Rue pour les Enfants in Dakar
Ecole de la Rue [School of the Street] is a relatively new school that offers a variety of courses (English, French grammar, history, science [chemistry],) and a preschool for younger children. Most of the students are from poor families. I worked at the Ecole de la Rue three mornings per week, co-teaching English to a group of 15-20 students with another Kalamazoo College student, Claire Tobin. This was my first experience teaching English; it has been challenging, but immensely rewarding. I particularly enjoy working with the students one-on-one.
