Van Andel Summer Research Internship: Ten-week paid research internship at the Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids. May 22-July 28 or June 12-August 18. Deadline, March 10.

National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU): Description of program and links to all REU sites. These grants provide research experiences in a variety of disciplines, stipends, are competitive and usually have February or March deadlines.

Dialysis Clinic, Inc. Summer Internship: Dialysis Clinic Inc. is sponsoring a summer internship for pre-medical students in the clinical area of organ transplantation. The internship includes shadowing physicians on rounds in the hospital, observing and assisting in an outpatient/clinic facility, and observing transplant and transplant-related surgical operations. Deadline, February 28, 2006.

Wayne State University: Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships for 10- to12-week full-time laboratory research in molecular biology and biochemistry; $2500 stipend. Flexible dates. Deadline, March.

Brigham and Young University: Bioinformatics and Systematics. Ten-weeks, $3000 stipend, travel allowance and housing. K alum, Keith Crandall is one of the many investigators in this program. Review of applications begins March 1.

UCSF Summer Research Training Program: For juniors or sophomores interested in a career as a physician scientist, $3000 stipend, housing and travel. Flexible starting date. Deadline, February 1, 2006.

University of Chicago : Summer Research Training Program. Nine-week program for sophomores and juniors, $3000 stipend and housing provided. June 14-August 13 (flexible). Deadline, February.

University of Connecticut: College Summer Fellowship Program: research, medical, and dental clinical exposures. Flexible dates, $2,500-$3,000 stipends. Application deadline: March 15.

Child Family Health International: International elective opportunities for pre-medical students.

Cornell Travler's Summer Research Fellowship: For juniors interested in practicing among underserved populations. Seven-week program from June 19-August 4. Stipend and housing provided. Deadline, March 1, 2006.

University of Iowa: Summer Undergraduate MSTP Research Program, an intensive experience for the individual interested in combined MD/PhD training for a career as a physician scientist. June 5-July 28. Stipend, room and travel allowance. Deadline, February 3, 2006.

Johns Hopkins University: Human anatomy for undergraduates, June 6-July 1. Tuition: $3700. Deadline, March 1, 2006.

University of Minnesota: Life Sciences Undergraduate Research Program. June 1-August 11. Stipends variable depending on program. Deadline, February 15, 2006.

National Institutes of Health: Summer internships in biomedical research. Flexible starting dates and variable stipends. Deadline, March 1.

Medical University of South Carolina: Ten-week summer undergraduate research in numerous fields; $3000 minimum stipend. June 5-August 11. Deadline, February 1, 2006.

Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine: Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). June 12-August 1. Deadline, February 1, 2006. Includes room and board, $1750 stipend, 8 quarter hours biology credit. Applications available in Dow 114.

Edward M. Chester Summer Scholars Program (for Ohio residents only): For undergraduates interested in exploring academic medicine and research at the MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio.$2000 stipend. May 30-August 3. Deadline, January 30, 2006).

University of Cincinnati
Summer Premedical Enrichment Program: Six-week program for juniors, seniors, postbaccaulaureate students wishing to gain exposure to a medical school setting. June 18-July 29, 2006. Deadline, February 1, 2006.
Summer Research Scholars Program: Eight-week research program for juniors, seniors, and postbaccaulareate students who have previous research experience. June 19-August 11, 2005. Deadline, February 1, 2006.

R.O.S.E. Program (Ohio residents, sophomores only): Paid 8-10 week summer research internship at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine; mentoring by medical faculty; early assurance acceptance to University of Cincinnati College of Medicine; shadowing opportunities. Deadline, March 1.

Children´s Hospital of Cincinnati: Ten-week research internships in all areas of pediatric medicine. Flexible dates. Recipients recieve a $3200 stipend for the summer. Deadline, March 1, 2006.

Penn State: Biogeochemical research initiative for education (includes biochemistry and molecular biology). Deadline, February 15, 2005.

SUNY Albany: Summer Research Program in Molecular and Cellular Biosciences. Full-time laboratory research, $3400 stipend, travel, housing, food allowance. Early June-mid August (10 weeks). Application deadline, February 1, 2006.


For disadvantaged and minority students

AAMC Minority Medical Education Program (SMEP): A free, six-week, intensive enrichment program to prepare committed, under-represented minority students for medical school. Offered at 11 medical school sites around the country. Dates vary with site. Academic enrichment, MCAT preparation, clinical experience, preparation for the medical school application process. Deadline, March 1, 2006.

Cornell University ACCESS: Ten-week summer research program for under-represented minority college students; $3000 stipend and up to $500 travel. Deadline, February 1, 2006.

University of Michigan School of Dentistry Office of Multicultural Affairs

Pipeline—aimed at pre-medical and pre-dental freshmen and sophomores. May 25-June 29, 2005. March 22, 2006 deadline.

Profile for success—aimed at pre-dental juniors and seniors. Mid-May to late June. March 22, 2006 deadline.

Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine:Summer scholars program. A premedical program designed to enhance the preparation of students from disadvantaged backgrounds for admission to medical school. Stipend, room and board, travel. Deadline, March 1.

University of Pittsburgh

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program for MInority Students: 10-week summer research and enrichment program for under-represented minority students interested in careers as physician scientists. Available to freshman-juniors; $4,300 stipend plus air fare. Deadline, February 1, 2006.

The Summer Premedical Academic Enrichment Program: Level I offers classroom and lab-based programming for underrepresented rising freshmen and sophomores, while Level II offers a mentored lab experience, admissions workshops and MCAT preparation for juniors and seniors. Deadline, March 1, 20056.

Gateways to the Laboratory: A tri-institutional summer program offered by Cornell-Rockefeller-Sloan Kettering. For freshmen and sophomores. Deadline, Februrary 1.

Rutgers University Project Learn: A 10-week program for sophomores and juniors preparing for the health professions; $3,150 stipend, tuition, room and board. May 31-August 5. Deadline, February 18, 2005.
