Requirements for the Major in History
Number of Units
Eight units are required, not including the SIP.
Required Courses
Although there are no formal prerequisites for courses in history
below the 300 level, the department strongly urges prospective majors
to begin their study of history with at least one of the courses
titled “Introduction to History” HIST 100, 101 or 102
and/or the survey of United States history (HIST 110 and 111). Majors
MUST take courses in each of the four divisions of the department:
• Early History (HIST 225, 226, CLAS/HIST 227, 229, 230,
232, 233, 235, 240)
• Modern European History (HIST 241, 244, 245, 246, 247,
250, 255, 257)
• United States History (HIST 110, 111, 200, 203, 206,209,
211, 213, 217, 220, 221, 223).
•Asian/African History (HIST 103, 104, 280,281, 285, 296,
297)

Hist 299: Sophomore Seminar, HIST 490: Senior Seminar in Historical
Methods, and one of the 390-level junior research seminars and

Number of Units and Required Courses
1. Six history units are required.
2. Minors must take courses in three of the four divisions of the
Department:
Early History, Modern European History, U.S. History, or Non-Western
History.
3. Minors must enroll in one of the390-level junior research seminars
General Program and Advising Notes
Advanced Placement
A maximum of two non-campus ourses may be counted toward the major
or minor. See department for specific requirements.
Senior Comprehensive Examinations
Senior history majors must complete a comprehensive written and
oral examination in their major field of history. Students must
have enrolled in at least two courses in a second field and at least
one in the other two divisions. Non-K courses do not fulfil these
distributional requirements.
