Pine ~ Off-Campus
with Windows
For security reasons, telnet cannot be used to connect to our
servers from off campus. Access is available via SSH, which can
work like telnet but is more secure. Since Windows does not include
an SSH client, one must be obtained from a third party. Instructions
for how
to download and configure PuTTY to access henson.kzoo.edu are
available.
- Open an SSH connection to the server henson.kzoo.edu,
using your email userid and email password (don't know
how? instructions
are available). The first time you connect, you
will be prompted to accept and save the host key. PuTTY
will display the host key as 4a:20:a3:aa:21:15:c6:94:b1:4a:d8:0a:65:f2:3a:b1,
and SSH will display it as xuson-susab-felep-sylyl-kehos-vatop-ryzoh-rozyp-kotus-sygyl-zuxax.
- Once connected, type the word "pine" (no
quotes) and press Enter
- if you have not used pine recently, you may encounter
a greeting message Type the letter "E" to
exit the greeting
- pine's main menu is displayed, in a configuration
that should look similar to the image at right
- You are now using pine. Use the arrow keys on
the keyboard to move the selection up and down,
and use your Enter key to make a selection. Other
commands are available as described in the bottom
two rows of text on the screen, and in the main
menu. For instance, to view an index of the messages in your
inbox, type the letter "I" for "index." When you are finished,
press the letter Q to quit. After pine closes, type "exit" (no
quotes) to disconnect.
