Recommended Course Sequence:

Although HDSR permits a quite flexible sequence of courses, we recommend that prospective majors take Introduction to Sociology (ANSO 107) and General Psychology (PSYC 101) in the first year to evaluate interest in these two basic disciplines. Developmental Psychology* (PSYC 210) and/or some course drawn from the Social Relations and/or Interventions options also often forms part of a student's first - or second - year selections.

Abnormal Psychology (PSYC 370) typically is deferred until at least sophomore winter quarter. We recommend that the two methods classes be taken in sophomore year, Quantitative Analysis and Statistical Reasoning (ANSO 212) ideally in winter and Qualitative Research Methods (ANSO 245) in spring. Both of these courses must be taken prior to the SIP.

Those students participating in a Study Abroad option during their junior spring quarter should take the HDSR Junior Seminar (HDSR 390) in their sophomore year. It is typical but not required that students undertake SIP-related research during their junior summer, and those doing a SIP in HDSR must take the SIP write-up seminar in their senior fall.

Comprehensive examinations in HDSR are given in senior winter in conjunction with the HDSR Senior Seminar (HDSR 490). Students formally present their SIPs at the Hightower Symposium in senior spring.

*In 2004-2005, Developmental Psychology is offered only in fall quarter (one section) and winter quarter (two sections).
