Kalamazoo College’s physical education program is one of the best among liberal arts colleges for many reasons — one is Rolla Anderson. As K’s athletic director and chair of the physical education department, he promoted the importance of physical education for liberal arts in his 43-year career at the College. Because of his dedication and that of his staff, there is a wide variety of classes, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletic opportunities for K students. He was named Coach of the Year in 1962 for leading the Hornet football team to their only undefeated and untied season. Under his leadership as athletic director, the College won nine MIAA all-sports titles. He coached seven championships teams in tennis, golf, cross country, and football. A member of K’s Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1997, Coach Anderson was also honored with the Weimer K. Hicks Award.
