George Acker influenced the lives of generations of K students during his 35 years as men’s tennis coach and physical education professor. During his tenure, Coach Acker led his teams to 7 NCAA Division III Championships and 35 MIAA Championships. Among his players were 38 All-Americans, 19 MIAA MVPs, and 13 MIAA Stowe Sportsmanship Award winners. While he is remembered for his stellar coaching performance, Coach Acker is beloved for the care and interest he showed to both his teams and his students in the classroom. At various times, he also coached football, wrestling and cross-country. Coach Acker was honored by the College with the Florence J. Lucasse Award for Excellence in Teaching and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was named the Division III Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1991, and the NCAA Division III Coach of the Decade for the 1980s.
