The Campaign for Kalamazoo College Priority 1

The newly established George Acker Endowed Scholarship supports student leaders who exemplify the outstanding character of George Acker, one of the College’s most iconic coaches

The first priority of The Campaign for Kalamazoo College is sustaining the long-term financial foundation of the Kalamazoo College learning experience. A healthy endowment ensures that our educational innovation and excellence remain robust even through occasional enrollment or economic fluctuations. Earnings from the endowment are invested into its continued growth and, each year, support critical elements of a K education.

Center for Environmental Stewardship

A key component of a Kalamazoo College education is teaching students to think critically about all aspects of their world. This includes assessing the human impact on the environment in which they live.

Of course, K has long been known for its strength in the sciences. This provided a strong foundation upon which to build an Environmental Studies program, which engages with other disciplines across campus to investigate the challenges found in maintaining an ecologically secure future, while utilizing the resources necessary to support the Earth’s seven billion inhabitants. Students in the program, and across campus, have also put their interests into action through such efforts as recycling, outdoor leadership training, and community gardens.

To generate further momentum, K is embarking on the creation of a Center for Environmental Stewardship, which will coordinate current programming at the College and expand its reach. An already existing resource-the Lillian Anderson Arboretum-will be central to this vision and will function as a learning laboratory for the liberal arts.

Faculty Endowment

Endowing additional faculty positions and faculty development funds is critical to assuring our students are educated by stellar teacher-scholars. This affords our students the opportunity to learn in a challenging and supportive environment.

Endowed scholarships

Scholarships make a K education more accessible to talented students regardless of their economic circumstances. Increasing the number of endowed scholarships will provide K’s exceptional educational experience to students from across the country and around the world, making K a true laboratory of intercultural living and learning.   For example, the newly established George Acker Endowed Scholarship, honoring one of the College’s iconic coaches, supports student leaders who exemplify the outstanding character of George Acker.

The Campaign for Kalamazoo College seeks to raise $61.5 million for the endowment, and to date, nearly $45 million of that total has been committed.
