Experiential Education : Senior Individualized Project

The Senior Individualized Project is the capstone of Kalamazoo College's program of liberal arts education. The SIP offers students the opportunity to make use of all their experiences at the College. In consultation with a faculty member, who serves as SIP supervisor, each student determines the project's form and the environment in which it is to be pursued. Creative work in the arts, laboratory or field research, student teaching, thesis, and internships are some of the forms these projects may take.

The Senior Individualized Project is a graduation requirement for all Kalamazoo College students. Every student must successfully complete a SIP before receiving a degree. Students may complete a SIP within any department of the College. A SIP, however, is usually done in the major department, or in one or both departments of a double major.

A SIP must follow one of the following approved formats: student teaching (through 2007-08 only); creative work in the arts culminating in an exhibition or performance; internship with a paper relating theory to practice; laboratory or field research with a paper; reading project culminating in reviews, bibliography, etc.; translations with appropriate explanation. Under exceptional circumstances, a student may take courses at "K" or at another institution in lieu of a SIP.

The SIP is not an initial exploratory process, but a culminating project based on course work, reading, interest, and experience. Students are advised to start planning their SIP well in advance of their senior year, and certainly no later than junior spring.
