I attended Kalamazoo College, New York University
and Western Michigan University, where I got my Masters.
I started teaching at K as an adjunct in 1987, I
believe.
My teaching philosophy? The unit of measure is the
classroom community--we all are elevated (or flattened)
together. My courses are assignment-driven, especially
in introductory writing courses. Teaching is as much
about allowing the students to recognize what they
already know, or remember what they've forgotten,
as it is about providing new information. Great writers
are voracious readers. We read a great deal of the
infamous, famous and unknowns in my writing classroom.
I like to open the doors and windows in my classroom--let
in real life, fresh air, and raucous energy as well
as silence.
I'm obviously most interested in teaching writing--and
my own writing is focused upon poetry, though I also
write creative nonfiction. |
