The Senior Individualized Project, or SIP, is a major component of your Kalamazoo College liberal arts education.  It is important to place the SIP within the context of your overall educational experience.  The SIP should be a capstone of your academic achievement; it comes at during a crucial period of your college education-- the transition through the Senior year, into graduation, and out into the world.  The SIP needs to be conceived in a way that will help propel you through this process.  The SIP can represent you to prospective graduate schools and employers.  It is worth taking seriously.

SIP Grades

The SIP is a major academic requirement; it is not a way to get academic credit for a summer job.
1.  SIPs are graded Credit, No Credit, Honors
2. Department expectations: serious research, good use of economic theory and good writing.

SIP Timeline

1. SIP information session
    Spring quarter, Junior year


2. For two unit SIPs, discuss your SIP topic with potential advisors.  For Experiential SIPs, finalize your internship plans.
    early Spring quarter, Junior year

3. Register for SIP during registration: more information
    Complete a SIP contract and return to the Department SIP coordinator
    Proposals to SIP advisor (2-unit SIPs)
    Spring quarter, Junior year (7th week)

4. Research/Internship
    Summer before Senior year.

Missing SIP deadlines will result in a failing grade (NC) for your SIP.  This would almost certainly delay your graduation and require you to complete your SIP as a Super Senior.

6. Experiential SIP due (1 unit SIPs)
    Friday, Second week, Fall quarter

7.  Research SIP: Research progress report due (2 unit SIPs)
     Friday, First week

8. Final Version of 2 unit SIP (complete and in folder) due

Students doing a 2 unit SIP will follow a schedule worked out with their own SIP advisor.
