KALAMAZOO COLLEGE
MINORS IN ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS

Rationale

The Department of Economics and Business offers three distinct minors:  Business, Economics, and International Commerce.  The minors program in the Department of Economics and Business is designed to benefit students who are aspiring to a career or graduate study closely affiliated with business, public policy, or international commerce.  Each minor is intended to complement the academic preparation and career goals of a specific group of students.  For example, a political science major who intends to pursue a career in law or local community development would benefit from the Minor in Economics with coursework focusing on public policy issues.  On the other hand, the Minor in International Commerce would complement a major in International Area Studies (IAS) and Foreign Languages.

The Minor in Business would meet the needs of several diverse groups of students.  For example, this minor program would be helpful to students who are either planning to start their own businesses or work in management for private or public companies.  In addition, a minor in business would greatly facilitate the career objectives of students who desire to work for manufacturing or financial enterprises.  It is also possible for a minor in business to adequately prepare a student to assume a managerial position in a not-for-profit organization, such as an art gallery or a philanthropic organization.

Course Requirements

The requirements for a minor in the Department of Economics and Business consists of a minimum of six courses.  Principles of Microeconomics (ECON 105) and Principles of Macroeconomics (ECON 106) are the core requirements for all three minors.  We do this because we believe that the minors program in economics and business should provide students with a clear understanding of the basic microeconomics and macroeconomics theory.  We suggest the student to complete both of these courses prior to taking the other required courses.

The selection of the four remaining courses depends on the specific program under consideration.  It should be noted that although the Department offers three minors, only one minor program will be certified by the Department for each student.  Furthermore, none of these minors can be combined with a major in Economics and Business.

Finally, a student should know that a career in business requires a certain level of competence in quantitative skills.  For this reason, those who have a minor in Business are strongly recommended (not required) to take a course in quantitative methods.  Courses specifically recommended for this purpose are ECON 205, ECON 206, MATH 260, and MATH 360.
