CONVENING FOR ACTION

Sites Selected for Preservation

Between August 2001 and January 2002, residents of Kalamazoo County were asked to identify and describe sites they thought deserved preservation. On July 9, 2001, a viewpoint in the Kalamazoo Gazette described the site selection process and invited people to contact Convening For Action project staff if they were interested in becoming site selectors. A letter was also sent to people who participated in the first phase of this project, Convening Our Community. In addition, groups such as the Kalamazoo City Historic Preservation Commission and the Kalamazoo Environmental Council were invited to select sites. Area middle school and high school principals were contacted about the project, and as a result students in several area high schools and middle schools also selected sites. Through these and other outreach methods, community members identified over 300 sites.
