KALAMAZOO COLLEGE ~ CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
STUDENT PROJECTS ABROAD 2005
GENERAL INFORMATION
The Students Projects Abroad (SPA) grant and fellowship program
is designed to help defray the costs of a Senior Individualized
Project or other College-related activity in an international
location. In order to facilitate a deeper understanding of another
language and culture, these fellowships and grants are designed
to provide additional funding to allow recipients to undertake
a project that they could not otherwise afford.
All applicants must be Kalamazoo College students in good social
standing who, at the time of application:
· can demonstrate proficiency in the foreign language needed
to carry out the project
· can give evidence of the ability to operate independently
in an international environment (most typically this will mean
having successfully undertaken study abroad in the country or
region where the project is planned),
· can demonstrate how the proposed project relates to their
long-term personal and professional goals,
· have faculty endorsement of their capability to complete
the proposed project, (e.g. the project has been approved by a
faculty advisor), and have support for the project by a mentor
overseas.
Funding is available through these programs:
oThe Beeler Fellowship honors the
late Mrs. Isabel Beeler's generous support of International Education
at Kalamazoo College.
The fellowship typically funds up to half the projected cost of
a SIP overseas. The maximum award is typically $2,000. The number
of Beeler Fellowships is determined by the amount of funding available
in a given fiscal year; most typically there are fewer than 15
awards made during an academic year.
Beeler Fellowship applicants must also:
· have junior or senior standing,
· have a GPA of 2.75 or better
· spend a minimum of 6 weeks overseas pursuing their project.
oThe Beeler Project Grant also honors Mrs. Isabel Beeler by typically
providing up to five awards of $600 each to students engaged in
SIP research or other projects related to their studies at the
College. The Project Grants are available to all Kalamazoo College
students, regardless of class standing.
Beeler Project Grant applicants must also:
· have a G.P.A. of 2.5 or better,
· spend 1-6 weeks abroad conducting their project.
oThe Collins Fellowship honors the
late Paul Collins, a former Dean of Students at the College. The
fellowship provides round-trip air transportation to a project
location in a developing country. The student must plan to carry
out a SIP or other project which will allow him or her to learn
first-hand about the suffering caused by poverty, famine, and
undernourishment. Typically, one Collins Fellowship is awarded
in each fiscal year. The Collins Fellowship is available to all
Kalamazoo College students, regardless of class standing.
Collins Fellowship applicants must also:
· have a G.P.A. of 2.5 or better
· spend at least 1 week at an international site for their
projects.
At the discretion of the committee, the combination of a Beeler
Fellowship and a Collins Fellowship is possible, as is the combination
of a Beeler Project Grant and a Collins Fellowship. A student
may not apply to both the Beeler Fellowship and the Beeler Project
Grant.
Applications are due in the Center for International Programs
on April 15, 2005. Applicants for the 2005 fellowship and grant
program are expected to complete their projects abroad during
the summer of 2005. Students who plan to pursue student teaching
abroad during the 2005/2006 academic year should also apply by
the April 15 deadline to be considered. Students interested in
completing senior projects abroad in subsequent summers should
apply during the spring of that calendar year. The selection committee
will review applications and supporting materials and awards will
be announced within 30 days after the application deadline. Funds
should be available within 14 days of the award announcement.
Applications received after the deadline will be considered on
a rolling basis, should funds still be available. Faxed applications
will be accepted ONLY from students overseas. A personal interview
may be required at the selection committee's discretion.

SELECTION
A selection committee awards fellowships and grants for Student
Projects Abroad. Awards are given subject to the availability
of funds for each fiscal year. In addition to the Eligibility
Requirements and the points to be discussed in the Personal Statement,
the selection committee also considers the following criteria
when evaluating applications: the appropriateness of the project
to the country and cultural setting, financial realism of the
project, relationship of the project to the student's long-range
goals and professional development, and the assessment of the
educational merit of the project by the faculty referees and overseas
project mentor. A personal interview may be required at the selection
committee's discretion.
NOTE: Awarding of fellowships is subject to availability of funds
for the program. The Center for International Programs reserves
the right to modify, change, or cancel the program without prior
notice. The selection committee reserves the right to make no
awards in a given year. The College Financial Aid Office is notified
of all awards made under this program. Receipt of a Collins or
Beeler fellowship or grant may impact a student's financial aid
package. Contact the Financial Aid Office for details. (rev:12/04)
