Academics Denmark's International Study program (DIS) is a renowned study abroad institution affiliated with the University of Copenhagen. This program offers courses in Art History, Business, Film, Early Multicultural Education, Economics, International Relations, Literature, Mass Communication & Journalism, Political Science, Scandinavian Studies, Sociology, in addition to Danish and Russian Language. Participants in this program take most classes with other international students. A few classes with Danish students are now available.
Courses The academic program includes the on-site orientation, which takes place a week before classes begin, and a 3-day study tour of Denmark. Typically students enroll in the equivalent of 5 K-units during the regular fall term at DIS which includes a Danish language course (1 K Unit). The 6th K Unit is earned with an independent study project initiated during the fall term and completed in January. Each student selects a topic according to her/his academic interests, and a supervising instructor. The project must comply with DIS guidelines for independent study and therefore is not an ICRP. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Danish Politics and Society (POLS), 20th Century European History (HIST), European Art and the 20th Century (ARTX), Nordic Mythology (RELG), and Masters of Modern Scandinavian Literature (LIT). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses.
Credits Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the Long-Term program. Students may not underload or overload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. It is the student's responsibility to consult his/her academic advisor concerning course selection. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or biology with biology. No partial credit will be rewarded. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the college catalogue for additional information. All course work, including the Integrative Cultural Research Project (where applicable), must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory.
ICRP/Field Study The ICRP is not a component of this program.
Housing DIS offers a choice between homestays with a Danish family or a single or double room in a Kollegium, which is a student dormitory. In homestays, students take their meals with the homestay family; in the Kollegium, students cook their own meals. In homestay placements, students typically have a minimum of a 30-minute commute to DIS.
Co-Curricular Opportunities The DIS program sponsors a number of social events that bring students, faculty, staff, and host families together. DIS also coordinates optional study and recreation tours. The cost of these tours, however, is the student's responsibility.
