Academics This program will focus on the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago as a case study of the social, political, and cultural changes in the Caribbean region from colonial times to present.
Courses Anthropology of the Peoples of the Caribbean: (SOAN) (UWI Anthropology II SY 23C course) Introduction to anthropology and anthropological methods and their problems; the cultural background of the Caribbean peoples; the concepts of culture, culture contact, acculturation, intercultural syncretism; identity, culture and Caribbean society. Field Study: using the resources and placements of the UWI Social Work unit, students will participate in field study/service learning placements, relating to topics covered in the course. Issues in Government and Politics in the West Indies (POLS): Political organization and leadership in the West Indies. Colonial legacies and the modern Commonwealth; The West Indies and the Caribbean region; The West Indies and the Americas (North, Central, South America); The West Indies and the other regions of the world. Introduction to International Relations in the Caribbean (POLS ) (UWI Political Science GT 38 B):Historical evolution of international relations in the Caribbean; foundations and conduct of foreign policies of Caribbean states; the Caribbean in the international system (regional, hemispheric, worldwide); contemporary international problems and issues in the Caribbean area. Literature and Society in the Caribbean (LIT) (UWI Literature GT 56 A): Analysis of the region’s main writers and the influence on the literature by indigenous forms including oral forms of calypso, rapso, reggae and story-telling as well as non-fiction, poetry and the short story. Cultures Credit: The following course has been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Anthropology of the Peoples of the Caribbean (ANSO). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses.
Credits Participants are eligible to earn three units of credit in the Short-Term program - one unit in sociology/anthropology, two units in political science. Credit earned on study abroad can be used to satisfy major, minor, or concentration requirements at the discretion of the Registrar. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for coursework completed abroad. Grades from all study courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system.
ICRP/Field Study The ICRP is not a component of this program.
Housing Students will live in student residences arranged by the University. Meals are taken at campus and area restaurants.
