Academics The Kalamazoo program at the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija at the Dehesa Campus is designed for students at the intermediate level of Spanish who wish to further develop their Spanish language proficiency. Students are enrolled in courses designed for international students in the University's Center for Hispanic Studies.
Courses The program begins with a four-week intensive Spanish language and cultural orientation course. The intensive course will include several required "guided visits" and some optional excursions. During the regular semester, students enroll in courses that have been designed for international students. Course selection and availability will depend upon the results of student's Spanish placement examination given following the intensive language course. Students with higher proficiency will have more course options to choose from. All students enroll in the Language and Culture Orientation Course (SPAN) during the month of September which earns 1 K unit. Then, depending upon language level placement, students will enroll in either 2 Spanish language courses (Langauge and Conversation (SPAN) and Spanish Grammar (SPAN)) and choose two pre-approved courses OR enroll in 1 Spanish language course and choose three of the pre-approved courses. The final unit is earned for the ICRP. Typical courses on the pre-approved list include: Art in the Prado Museum (ARTX), Spanish Society (SOC SCI), Spanish Art and Civilization (ARTX), Contemporary Spain (SOC SCI), Introduction to Spain (SOC SCI), Discovering Spain (SOC SCI), Spain and the Spanish People (SOC SCI), Spain and it's Diversity (SOC SCI), and 20th Century Spanish Drama (SPAN). . Kalamazoo students will not be able to take Spanish literature courses while in Madrid. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Spanish Art and Civilization (ARTX), Contemporary Spain (SOC SCI), Introduction to Spain (SOC SCI), Spain and the Spanish People (SOC SCI), Spain and its Diversity (SOC SCI), Spanish Society (SOC SCI), and Discovering Spain (SOC SCI). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses.
Credits Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the long-term program. Students may not underload or overload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or art with art. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the college catalogue for additional information. All course work, including the integrative cultural research project, must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory.
ICRP/Field Study All students are required to complete an Integrative Cultural Research Project while in Madrid in January, to be completed in early February. The Integrative Cultural Research Project can be either a research project or an unpaid internship that explores global issues and the local circumstances, approaches and solutions while enhancing students' local language skills. Internship placements are typically with international agencies, women's groups, small business, or Non-Governmental Organizations. The program staff assists students with project design, internship placement or both. All ICRPs are conducted in the Madrid area. The research or internship will result in a major paper (10-15 pages.) in Spanish. The paper is due and must be turned in to the Resident Director before the end of the academic program or no credit will be awarded.
Housing Students live and eat in home stays selected by the University. As most larger cities, students should expect to commute approximately one hour per day.
Co-Curricular Opportunities Students are eligible to participate in activities sponsored by Universidad Nebrija. Students are required to participate in 8 cultural activities of their choice, and are also encouraged to join one of the many clubs and organizations in the city. There are also many opportunities for volunteer work and participation in organized sports.
