Academics
Courses Many courses offered at Hong Kong Baptist University are available to study abroad students, provided they meet the normal pre-requisite requirements. Some of the courses are taught in English, others in English and Chinese, and the remainder only in Chinese. Academic advising in the international office takes place during the orientation session, which precedes the academic year. All study abroad students at HKBU are required to enroll in a special course for international students: "Understanding Chinese Culture." A list of courses appropriate for study abroad students is typically available before the program begins. It is the student's responsibility to consult her/his academic advisor concerning course selection. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Understanding Chinese Cultures (SOC SCI), Regional Geography of China (SOC SCI), Government and Politics of China (POLS), and Traditional Chinese Society (SOC SCI). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses.
Credits Students must enroll in the equivalent of 9 K-units of credit over the two semesters for the Extended-Term program. Students may not underload or overload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as one K-unit of credit, a course must have 3 semester hours or a minimum number of 40-45 contact hours for the semester. No partial credit will be awarded. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of credit points for a K-unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or biology with biology. All courses must be passed with a grade of "C" or higher for credit. All course work must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of each course, the appropriate discipline and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grade system. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. Attendance at all classes is mandatory.
ICRP/Field Study The ICRP is not a component of this program.
Housing Students live in student residence halls with a local/mainland HKBU student as arranged by the University international office. At least one cafeteria serves hall residents daily during the academic program. However, student housing fees do not include a meal plan. Note: HKBU is a nonsmoking facility. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on campus.
Co-Curricular Opportunities Students have access to all University facilities. The University sponsors a number of student organizations. The University also sponsors a changing program of activities and entertainment including a weekend tour into GuangZhou each semester. There is easy public transportation from campus to anywhere in Hong Kong. For more information consult the HKBU website.
