Academics The program at the Universidad Extremadura is designed for students with advanced skills in Spanish who wish to study at a Spanish University. The program offers a balance of courses specially designed for foreign students and regular University offerings. The program is suited for students of the Humanities, Literature, and Social Sciences.
Courses The program begins with an intensive Spanish and orientation course. During the semester, students take three courses that have been designed for Kalamazoo students and are taught by University faculty. In addition, students complete an ICRP and enroll in two courses chosen from a list of approved course offerings at the Universidad de Extremadura. During the first semester, students enroll in the following courses: Art and History of Spain (HART ), and Advanced Spanish Language (SPAN), each earning one K unit. Kalamazoo students are placed in one of two levels for the Spanish courses based upon an evaluation of ability and courses previously taken at Kalamazoo College and a placement test upon arrival. Students who have already taken SPA 301 at K will take Spanish Literature (SPAN). Students who have not taken SPA 301 at K will enroll in an additional content course. Courses provided specificall for Kalamazoo students include History of Islam (RELG) and Comtemporary Spanish Culture Through Cinema (SPA). Students also enroll in one or two courses chosen from a list of approved course offerings at the University. For students enrolled in the long-term program, the final unit of credit will be earned from the Integrative Cultural Research Project (ICRP). During the second semester, students who are in the extended-term program enroll in three additional selected University courses and complete the Integrative Cultural Research Project (ICRP). Cultures Credit: The following course has been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Spanish Art and Culture (SOC SCI). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses.
Credits Students must enroll in the equivalent of 9 K-Units of credit for the Extended-Term program. Students may not overload or underload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or art with art. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. All course work, including the Integrative Cultural Research Project, must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Attendance at all classes is mandatory.
ICRP/Field Study All students are required to complete an Integrative Cultural Research Project while in Caceres in January, to be completed in early February. The Integrative Cultural Research Project can be either a research project or an unpaid internship that explores global issues and the local circumstances, approaches and solutions while enhancing students' local language skills. Internship placements are typically with international agencies, women's groups, small business, or Non-Governmental Organizations. The program staff assists students with project design, internship placement or both. All ICRPs are conducted in the Caceres area. The research or internship will result in a major paper (10-15 pages.) in Spanish. The paper is due and must be turned in to the Resident Director before the end of the academic program or no credit will be awarded.
Housing Students live and eat in home stays with Spanish families selected by Kalamazoo College's Resident Director. Students should expect a daily commute of approximately one hour.
Co-Curricular Opportunities Students are eligible to participate in activities sponsored by the Universidad de Extremadura. Students are also encouraged to join one of the many clubs and organizations in the city. There are also many opportunities for volunteer work.
Excursions There are group excursions to Merida (site of Roman ruins), Madrid, Guadalupe and Trujillo.
