| Academics | The University of Aberdeen is comprised of 8 Faculties and has a student population of 10,600. Students participating in the program have access to courses in any department, except medicine, provided the pre-requisites are met. Third- and fourth-year classes require students to have at least six (6) prior courses in that subject. The third and fourth-level English courses, students must have had at least six (6) prior literature courses. Creative writing, rhetoric, and advanced placement credits are not counted. First and second level courses are conducted as seminars. Independent, motivated, and self-disciplined students are best suited for this program. The on-site orientation is approximately one week in duration and includes tours, academic advising, course registration and an excursion. At this time an academic advisor at King's College is assigned to assist with registration. Students in the Long-Term program may not conclude their academic program early. Each semester, the Scotland Program sponsors two bus trips. |
| Courses | The Science and English departments have consistently been popular with Kalamazoo students. Academic credit for only one first year course can be transferred to Kalamazoo College. It is the student's responsibility to consult his/her academic advisor concerning course selection.Cultures Credit: The following courses have been approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: History of Language in the British Isles (HIST/LANG), Road to Integration: The European Construction (HIST), Early Christian Art of Northern Britain and Ireland (HIST/ARTX), The Women's Movement in 20th Century Britain (WMST). Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses. |
| Credits | Students must enroll in the equivalent of 6 K-Units of credit for the Long-Term program. All course work for the long-term program must be completed during the regular semester. Students may not underload or overload. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. In order to be counted as one K-Unit of credit, a course must have 40-45 contact hours or at least 3 credit hours (courses with 6 credit hours will earn 2 K units). No partial credit will be awarded. In cases where students must combine courses to achieve the minimum number of contact hours for a unit of credit, both courses must be from the same discipline, e.g. history with history or art with art. Students must attend all classes, complete all assignments and earn a "C" or better in the local grading system to receive credit. All course work, must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system. Consult the Study Abroad Handbook and the College catalogue for additional information. Attendance at all classes is mandatory. |
| ICRP/Field Study | The ICRP is not a component of this program. |
| Housing | Students are housed in university residence halls. All students live in single rooms and have a choice of living in a residence hall with an associated cafeteria or in a residence hall where they cook their own meals in a small kitchen. All university residence halls integrate visiting students with students from Scotland, the UK, Ireland, and the rest of the world. All changes in housing assignments must be approved in advance by the Director of the Center for International Programs at Kalamazoo College and the University of Aberdeen housing office. | |
| Co-Curricular Opportunities | Students may participate in any of the activities sponsored by the University and are encouraged to join one of the many clubs associated with the University. |
