Academics The study of community and development in Mexico forms the focus of the long-term study abroad program. Participants will define, explore, and apply concepts of community and development through focused interaction with local indigenous communities and comparison with other examples of community throughout the country; reflect on their values and how values are communicated in different cultures; learn guidelines for how to design and plan community-based workshops; learn guidelines on oral history techniques and how to prepare and conduct interviews; study the role of traditional cultural practices in community development; develop a more sophisticated understanding of contemporary Mexico through local community perspectives and coursework; conduct a community-based project; and increase personal confidence and proficiency in the use of the Spanish language.
Courses A series of field studies and an Integrative Cultural Research Project (ICRP) complement the community-focused curriculum which includes courses in Community and Development, Traditional Indigenous Practices, Contemporary Issues in Mexico, US/Mexican Relations, and Spanish. Anticipated field studies include the captital Mexico City, the international development zone in Tehuantepec, and the border cities of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas. Cultures Credit: The following courses have been pre-approved as fulfilling the "cultures" requirement: Mexican Civilization and Culture; Community Development in Oaxaca. Please see the Study Abroad Handbook regarding instructions for petitioning for "cultures" credit for other courses.
Credits Participants are eligible to earn six (6) units of credit in the Long-Term program - one unit in Spanish, four in Social Science, and one for the ICRP. The field studies are a required academic component of the Community and Development course. Credit earned on study abroad can be used to satisfy major, minor, or concentration requirements at the discretion of the Registrar. To receive Kalamazoo credit, courses must be within the liberal arts tradition. Students must earn the equivalent of a "C" in the local grading system to receive credit for course work completed abroad. All course work, including the directed Integrative Cultural Research Project, must be completed and turned in before the end of the academic program or no credit will be given. Grades from all study abroad courses will appear on the Kalamazoo transcript but are not included in the Kalamazoo grade point average. The transcript will list the title of the course, the appropriate discipline, and a translation of the local grade into the Kalamazoo "A, B, C" grading system.
ICRP/Field Study The Integrative Cultural Research Project can be either a research project or an unpaid internship that explores global issues and the local circumstances, approaches and solutions while enhancing students' local language skills. Internship placements are typically with international agencies, women's groups, small businesses, or Non-Governmental Organizations. The program staff assists students with project design, internship placement or both. All ICRPs are conducted in the Oaxaca area. The research or internship will tesult in a major paper (10-15 pages) in Spanish. The paper is due and must be turned in to the Reseident Director before the end of the academic program or no credit will be awarded.
Housing Students live and eat in home stays selected by Kalamazoo College's Resident Director on-site.
Co-Curricular Opportunities Students are eligible to participate in all activities sponsored by the Centro de Idiomas and are encouraged to join local clubs and organizations.
